White House can no longer defend federal marriage ban

If the Obama administration can find a way around the Defense of Marriage Act to allow same-sex married couples to be part of the 2010 U.S. Census, then it should take the logical next step of granting legal status to these couples, according to this Los Angeles Times editorial. “With same-sex marriage legalized in six states, the District of Columbia recognizing such marriages performed elsewhere and an estimated 18,000 married gay couples living in California, what’s needed aren’t convoluted interpretations of the federal law but a push from President Obama for Congress to repeal it,” the Times writes.
