Maine’s Anti-Gay Marriage Supporters Kindly Request You Stop Calling Them Bigots

There weren’t supposed to be any media at Sunday’s anti-gay marriage convention in Augusta, Maine. Ooops. The reporters are CBS/WGME attended anyway, handicam in hand. Not much that you wouldn’t expect: The Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins gave a history lesson; Maine’s Roman Catholic Bishop Richard Malone invoked god to defend his discrimination; and the 1,500 attendees clapped along.

Watch the report here.

Maybe it is about time the Catholic Church and other religious organizations that meddle in politics lost their tax exempt status. I recall a priest who had to resign his post as a Congressman because the Pope said priests should not be involved in politics. This was back in the 70s, I think. When the bishop of Maine Catholics speaks at an event like this, he is not speaking as an individual. He is speaking for his religion which, I believe, is against the tax laws.

Seems to me that if you’re afraid to express your opinion in public and in front of the media, than maybe you should re-evaluate your opinion.

We live in a society where you shouldn’t have to be afraid of your opinions if they’re not shared by the rest of society, so long as there’s a legal and/or moral basis. But the groups who choose to gather and act out in secrecy slide down a very slippery slope – from being unpopular, to illegal or immoral whether or not they may be backed up by legal statute or religious spokesperson. What ever happened to separation of church and state anyway?

It is sad so many people, still do not understand, that marriage is for everyone, not just a few.

    Bigots?

How about marriage foes, or sexually phobic, or the marriage police?

Well, when they stop behaving like bigots maybe people will stop calling them bigots. Go figure!
