Cleveland has been awarded the 2014 International Gay Games.

The Gay Games will have around 12,000 participants and an estimated 100,000. The 14 original contenders for host city were whittled down to three; Cleveland, Boston and Washington, DC. The winning city was announced from Cologne, Germany—the site of the 2010 games.

I grew up in Cleveland, a blue-collar city with a lot to offer, but which is also saddled with a sadly negative national reputation. I am really proud of the city for making this bid and earning this event in 2014. Of course, as a rust belt city, Cleveland is not Washington, D.C., or New York, or Boston, or even Chicago, but I hope folks will go to Cleveland with an open mind and willingness to explore this proud city’s rich culture and history. And, pragmatically, Cleveland is a much more affordable trip option than those other cities…

    Congrats Cleveland!
