Anti-Gay Groups Asked To Prove How Gay Marriage Threatens Traditional Unions

A judge presiding over a legal challenge to California’s gay marriage ban has asked anti-gay groups to prove how it affects heterosexual marriage.

Gay marriage was legalized in California in 2008 but was banned several months later by the voter initiative Proposition 8.

Two unmarried couples have launched a lawsuit over the ban, claiming it is unconstitutional.

Anti-gay group Protect Marriage, which led support for Prop 8, asked US District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker to throw the case out of court but Walker has refused, meaning the case will go to trial in January.

Lawyer for Protect Marriage, Charles Cooper, argued that the ban was necessary to foster “naturally procreative relationships”.

But Walker said: “What is the harm to the procreation purpose you outlined of allowing same-sex couples to get married?”

In bizarre scenes, Cooper was forced to admit he did not know.

Finally, a judge with the cojones to ask the all important question, prove it.

I think this is where the anti gay marriage groups finally meet their Rubicon. They’re going to have to come up with compelling evidence to prove their case, and I don’t think Judge Walker is going to countenance the old Bible ploy. As they say in Florida, fish, cut bait, or get off the damned boat. Cross your fingers, kids, this could be the deal maker.

Oh, so the gay marriage ban is “necessary to foster ‘naturally procreative relationships.’ Hmmmm, I guess then that all of those heterosexuals who cannot or choose not to procreate or choose to adopt or require artificial methods of procreation should be banned from marriage as they would not be supporting ‘naturally procreative relationships’ and thus would be undermining heterosexual marriages. Sounds OK :-)

I love it! How can they prove something that does not exist (gays threatening the fabric of marriage, that is)?

Threats like “allowing gays to marry will destroy the sanctity of marriage” is hilarious. What? Will everyone suddenly turn gay the day we are permitted this special right? Get over yourselves!

Let’s see I’ve heard, because if people can choose to live with a gay partner they won’t marry and have kids and the human race won’t procreate and we will become extinct. I loved hearing that one–and the person was serious! $10 says they mention sex with animals and children before the trial is over. Every hetero-living-in-fear seems obsessed with sex with animals and children and gay sex. They are really scary people. They should worry about children being around these protect marriage people.

It’s about time a judge asked those yahoos to show how “traditional marriage” is harmed by marriage between two loving poeple.
