Oops: Did Texas Ban Marriage?

Texas lawmakers wanted to make sure gay people couldn’t be married. Instead, it seems, they may have made sure no one can.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has the story. Here’s what happened: In 2005, Texas voters and the state Legislature approved a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

But the amendment included the following clause, which was reportedly designed to ban civil unions and domestic partnerships: “This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

One thing that is “identical…to marriage,” of course, is marriage.

It’s been a long hard fight to get rights for all people of the LGBT community everywhere. I campaigned against the amendement in Texas in 2005 since I lived in Lubbock, TX at that time.
It’s ignorant people like W. Kevin that causes laws like this to be passed or left in place. Joke or not, it’s prejudiced.
Hopefully one day, people will not be so biggoted or biased. We are fighting hard to gain the rights for the LGBT community when some people have rights that should be limited or taken away.

Ah well, remember the old gag about the moron who moved from New York to Texas, thus raising the IQ level of both states?

If only we could allow Texas to secede. What a wonderful world it would be.
