Barbara Walters Ruined Ricky Martin’s Career?

Barbara Walters is hanging up her hat. And she has just one single regret over that nearly three-decade era: Ricky Martin.

Of her 93 interviews with A-list stars, Walter’s only admitted mistake is pushing Martin to address the rumors that he’s gay.

“In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was,” she says now. “A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now I feel it was an inappropriate question.”

Do you think her interview destroyed Ricky Martin’s career?

“Destroyed”, no not really. Didn’t help it all either. 2010 is a VERY different time and a VERY different place. Even just 10 years ago, it was “weird” and perhaps dangerous to be openly Gay in America. There are still quite a few individuals and organized groups whose main objective is to exact violence and pain on those who are unlike them. There’s no joke there, particularly when you have children like Ricky Martin does. Add to that global celebrity and the Macho Latin Culture, and perhaps you’ll see why Ricky Martin took his time making peace with himself and his reality before announcing to the world. Good Work Ricky! Many will follow you now. And that’s a very good thin.
